Our After School Program serves children, ages 4 – 13, and meets five days a week. Children receive homework help, one-on-one tutoring, and engage in special group projects. Each child is placed in a developmentally appropriate math and literacy program and is able to mark their improvement regularly. Students have access to computers, where they use educational software, receive training on word processing software, keep computer journals, communicate on e-mail with pen pals from around the world, and learn how to conduct research on the Internet. In addition to these daily activities the children engage in special discussions with staff centering around topics such as racism, sexism, violence, leadership, as well as current events. Enrichment trips are also a part of the curriculum. Recently, one of the volunteers made arrangements for three students to visit Montana for a week to join Jack Horner, world famous dinosaur paleontologist, on one of his digs.
At the end of each school year After School Program staff distributes a questionnaire to parents and caregivers giving them an opportunity to provide feedback on the program. The staff then uses this feedback to improve on various aspects of the program. In addition, we request copies of report cards and test scores from parents and have semi-annual meetings with the teachers in our program to coordinate our efforts and track the students’ progress in school.
