THE LEARNING CENTER'S PROGRAMS
For almost two decades the Learning Center has provided a warm, supportive, and encouraging atmosphere for children to learn. In addition, Booker T. welcomes parents to share concerns, obtain help with personal and family problems, become involved in their children's education, and further their own learning. The Learning Center's programs focus on education, since education has a positive influence on a person's values, self-esteem, and ambition.

Our Community of East Harlem faces many challenges which our programs have been developed to address. For more information about these problems, please see our Community Challenges page.

  • After School Program
Our After School Program serves children, ages 4 – 13, and meets five days a week. Children receive homework help, one-on-one tutoring, and engage in special group projects.
  • Y - L.E.A.D.
Y – L.E.A.D. (Youth for Leadership, Education, Achievement and Discipline); focuses on aiding adolescents from our community in developing the skills they need to become successful adults.
  • New Generations
This initiative serves high school students who are determined to be the first members of their families to go to college.
  • Turning Point
Turning Point was created for adults in the community interested in pursuing a GED, obtaining remedial education in preparation for college, or receiving computer training for career advancement.
  • Summer Program
The Summer Program was created to provide youngsters, ages 4 through 13, with a fun, safe and stimulating alternative to an empty apartment or dangerous city streets.
  • L.E.A.P.
L.E.A.P. (Learning Enrichment Activities Program) is a reading readiness program for 4 – 11 year olds which meets every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
  • Aspen Youth Experience
A highlight of each year is sending several of our students to participate in the Aspen Youth Experience in Aspen, Colorado, which is a nation-wide program reaching out to teenagers to teach life skills and leadership development.
  • Expressions
This group offers young people the opportunity to develop skills in oil painting, learn paint mixing and materials, surface preparation, canvas stretching, line and form, composition and more.
