Girls on the Run has proven to be a big hit this year at Booker T. This national program is a life changing, experiential learning program for girls’ ages eight to thirteen years old, which meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 4pm to 5:30 pm. The program combines training for a 3.1 mile running event, all while helping young girls enhance their self-esteem and perform uplifting workouts. The goals of the program are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development.
The objective of Girls on the Run is to educate and empower girls at an early age in order to prevent the display of at-risk activities in the future. At risk activities can include substance/alcohol use, eating disorders, early onset of sexual activity, and other issues. This program has proven to be a real hit at Booker T. and has fostered a spirit of "team" around the learning center. Their weeks long training culminated this past Saturday, as the Booker T. girls completed their 5K run at Asphalt Green. One Booker T. participant Abigail P. finished in 8th place!
